AbstractThe monograph synthesizes findings of the Vocational Training and Placement of the Severely Handicapped Project (VOTAP) and offers recommendations for further research and development. Chapter 1 presents the theoretical model that describes the dimensions upon which the task of developing research and development recommendations could be approached independently from the recommendations of practitioners in the field. Chapter 2 describes the needs and recommendations of program staff as determined by the VOTAP survey and by the members of the VOTAP Advisory Panel. Recommendations that follow in Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 are developed using both approaches. The following areas are covered (sample subareas in parentheses): educational programing (increasing prevocational experiences and work adjustment skills in order to help handicapped persons succeed in employment); occupational independence (fostering positive public attitudes toward the handicapped in the work place); socioemotional adjustment (developing self esteem accurate self appraisal, and realistic vocational and career aspiration); and physical accommodations (increasing the availability of assistive devices). Chapter 7 summarizes the recommendations and emphasizes those that reflect the most pressing concerns. (SBH)
