AbstractExperiences in prenatal life and early childhood that may cause personality disorders or criminal behavior in later life are examined in these proceedings of the Subcommittee on Childhood Experiences as Causes of Criminal Behavior, of the Standing Committee on Health, Welfare and Science, Senate of Canada. This issue, the 17th in a series of 19 hearings dating from November 1977 to July 1978, presents expert testimony by Professor Harold Minden on the importance of parental training and parent involvement in the remediation of children's learning and emotional problems. Clinical experience is cited as evidence of a reciprocal effect between children's learning disabilities and parental stress, and it is suggested that the parental effects in this relationship have been largely ignored by professionals in the past. A 10-week parent training course developed for parents of children with learning disabilities and emotional problems is outlined. Other issues touched on during questioning by senators include: the role of parents; home care, day care, or institutional care for learning disabled children; psychopathology; moral development; violence and television viewing; socioeconomic status and parenting; and working parents. The text of the proceedings is presented in both English and French. (JMB)
