Abstract | This social studies unit includes a teaching guide, student text, study guide, teacher background material, and composite pretest/posttest covering archaeological methods, evolution, fossils and man, and development of culture during the prehistoric periods in the Old World. It is part of the Anthropology Curriculum Project and is designed for grade 5. The unit objective is to provide students with a background for understanding man and his culture. Subject material is divided into four sections: a discussion of archaeologists and their methods, evolution and subsequent scientific theories, the development of fossil man, and technological advances made during prehistoric periods. The teacher's guide suggests lesson plans for the unit, listing vocabulary, objectives and content, activities, review questions, educational media, and definitions. Drawings, maps, and charts illustrate the pupil text. The pupil's study guide introduces each subject, lists key words and ideas, suggests activities, encourages independent thinking by asking questions not answered in the text, and offers review questions. A glossary and 181 completion exercise sentences conclude the section. The teacher background materials examine the subjects in detail, including charts, maps, and bibliographies. A composite form for the pretest/posttest consists of fifty multiple-choice questions. (CK) |
