AbstractLorain County Community College (LCCC) has provided training programs for the employees of the United States Steel Corporation since 1969 and for the Lorain Telephone Company since 1977. These training programs are campus-based, and the students attend classes for four or five week periods at a time. An effort has been made to adhere as closely as possible to the regular class pattern of the college in order to integrate the trainees into the regular student body and minimize program visibility on campus. Program content is based on the occupational training needs determined by college representatives and company training officials. Currently, there are four trade areas involved: Basic Telephony, Electrical Skills, Mobile Equipment Repair, and Millwright. Several other trade areas have been serviced at times. The curriculum, which is common to all students, is based upon a "building block" approach that helps alleviate problems of scheduling, student alienation and stress, and finding skilled instructors. The instructors are part-time, temporarily employed specialists in the various trade skill areas. Because of the unique nature of the apprentice groups, there were some problems early in the program. Some of these necessitated the clarification of college/union relationships. An appendix contains course schedules, outlines, and syllabi, and the report describes program costs and administrative structures. (DR)
