AbstractThe effectiveness of a four-week residential summer institute, developed by the Higher Education Resource Services (HERS, Mid-Atlantic), the University of Pennsylvania, and Bryn Mawr College, to train women for administrative positions in higher education was assessed in a 1978 study and will be evaluated in a longitudinal analysis. The institute provides training in finance and budgeting, management and information systems, and understanding of governance and planning, and it provides practical experiences in administrative problem solving. Both qualitative and descriptive data are gathered each year at the conclusion of the institute. Participants in 1978 expressed a high level of satisfaction with the institute, and the results indicate it was an effective means of training. Women who attended the institute aspire to high level administrative positions and as a group are very career-oriented. Almost three-fourths of the participants presently have administrative responsibilities, and they attended the institute in order to advance personally and professionally and to acquire specific skills. Objectives of the longitudinal study and a brief review of reports on the status of women in higher education administration are presented. (SW)
