AbstractThis study focuses on the problems arising from the use of the mother tongue in education in Nigeria and the solutions that are being attempted. It is an extension of an earlier comprehensive review of the mother tongue as a means of promoting equal access to education. To outline the problems involved, the various bodies and institutions involved in the use of the mother tongue in education are discussed. Problems facing the states include: (1) lack of qualified teachers of the mother tongue; (2) poor development and uncoordinated efforts at development; (3) the low status of the languages and the lack of literature aimed at sufficiency and adequacy of the languages as media of instruction; (4) need for revision and updating of orthographies; (5) avoidance by the mass media of scientific and technical themes when using Nigerian language; (6) negative attitudes of parents; (7) the high status of English generally and in education; and (8) the transfer from the mother tongue to English as a medium of instruction. It is concluded that the main problem is language policy, the sufficiency of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction, and teacher training. (SW)
