Abstract | A major goal of schools should be to develop self-directed people with knowledge, skills, and attitudes for fully functioning future living. More specifically, schools must seek to provide education in the areas of: (1) citizenship, everyday living, and personal growth; (2) skill development relating to problem solving, decision-making, research, interpersonal relations, communication, and personal reflection; and (3) attitudes concerning personal causation, science, self-acceptance and self-growth, and caring. Schools can and should begin to conceptualize their future living programs by establishing goal priorities and then deciding in what ways goals can be implemented at different grade levels and in different classrooms.
