| Abstract | The study reported in this paper was undertaken to determine the number of blacks who graduated from a selected group of nine eastern universities between 1895 and 1945. Conditions and black student experiences during this period are considered and compared with the present. A short review of history prior to 1895 is provided to put into perspective the economic, political, social, and educational factors which prevented many blacks from attending college during this period. The experiences of several blacks who were able to attend colleges, and their accomplishments, are briefly described. Implications of this study for current and future university policy are discussed. Recommendations are made for the removal of legal and economic barriers, increase in financial aid to black student applicants, remedial help for black students who come from high schools that do not adequately prepare them for college level work, and the elimination of token integration.
