AbstractOriginally general education was a reaction against over-specialization and academic compartmentalization arising from the specialized degree structure--a reaction which stressed the need for a common experience for all students and emphasized the heritage of Western civilization. Early authors on the topic sought to define general education and liberal arts, and to assess its outcomes and the various approaches to instruction. Later authors were more concerned with its failures and predicted its forthcoming demise. Recent attempts to revive general education have tried to redefine the core of common experience which all students should share, and to introduce a focus on the present and future. While recognizing the diversity among students, this redefinition establishes universal goals--students must be able to think analytically and critically, to solve problems, and to communicate through a variety of media. The general education teacher, in achieving these goals, must try a variety of instructional approaches, recognizing the problems inherent in repeatedly using a method that appeals to only one group or that stresses only one cognitive style. A state-of-the-art look at general education should consider the areas of study that now comprise the field, the structure of learning within it, content-related tools of technology, the commitment of community colleges, and the new community college students and their objectives and educational choices.
