Abstract | Due to increased dissatisfaction with Media Services, the evaluation department of Eugene School District 4J was asked to look into the centralized ordering and processing of library materials and textbooks. Areas of complaint included time lags in receiving books, loss of control of ordering and processing at the school level, and processing errors. Data were collected in 43 interviews, questionnaires were sent to all district schools, and a random sample search was made of 36,000 media service orders. A number of findings emerged, including the findings that unacceptably long time lags exist in ordering and processing; school personnel have lost control over ordering and processing, but this is inevitable in a centralized system; and Media Services has acknowledged processing errors and is trying to correct them. Included in the report is a brief history of the district's centralized processing system, the methodology used to review the complaints, five tables showing actual time lags involved in the major steps of ordering and processing broken down by type of book and type of school, and a discussion of the complaints. The report concludes with recommendations for the establishment of an advisory committee and a review of Media Services' staffing. (Author/LD) |
