| Abstract | This report describes problems directly related to the present method of dealing with suspension and expulsion in the Chicago public schools and recommends specific strategies for dealing with these problems. Problems discussed include: (1) the need for a definition of "gross misconduct"; (2) the need for the dissemination of information on Board of Education policies relative to suspension; (3) the need for thorough orientation of students as to suspendable offenses; (4) the need for clarification of suspension and expulsion policies; (5) problems related to the various roles delegated to school counselors; and (6) the loss of education experiences by suspended or expelled students. In addition, other problems that may contribute to suspensions and/or expulsions such as the socioeconomic level of students, divorce, unemployment, chronic illness, and delinquency are outlined.
