Abstract | The document presents high, medium, and low projections of the world's population for the year 2000. The objective of the study is to determine demands on natural resources and the environment which will be brought about by changes in the world's population. The document is presented in three major sections. Section I provides an overview of the study, identifies regions and countries examined, discusses medium level population projections, describes the projection method of basing information on a base year (1975), and provides definitions of terms used in the report. Sections II and III consist of tables and charts illustrating population statistics for various countries and regions of the world. Data are presented on population by age and sex, average annual growth rate, birth rates, fertility rates, life expectancy, and alternative estimates. The document concludes with an appendix which presents information on revised projections for the People's Republic of China, sources of base-year data, and fertility rates estimated from 1960-75 and projected for 1975-2000.
