Abstract | This study was designed to investigate and analyze specific instructor and student behaviors in introductory and advanced laboratories of five science disciplines (botany, chemistry, geology, physics, and zoology) at a major midwestern university. The instructor sample involved teaching assistants from various science departments. The student observations were made by randomly selecting students from the laboratories and observing their behaviors for ten minutes at a time. The Science Laboratory Interaction Categories system was designed and used to code the instructor and student behaviors. Data were analyzed using the process of macroanalysis. The instructor and student behaviors were not consistent among science disciplines or among the introductory and advanced level courses within science disciplines. It appears that even at the college level students are performing cookbookish laboratories with the role of the instructor a very mechanical one. (BB) |
