| Abstract | The higher education lobby has been severely criticized for its aloofness toward politics. In the past, vigorous lobbying was less necessary, but sustained representation in the political sphere is now vital to the future of higher education. Although the education lobby failed to promote its interests concerning the Education Amendments of 1972, it helped shape the results of debates on the 1976 amendments. The political self-consciousness of higher education and its concern for effective representation are growing. Legislators are increasingly being given the data and policy suggestions they need. Nevertheless, higher education needs to utilize more fully the range of political resources at its command. Higher education must also deal with the problem of whether to strive for a united front or to let each separate interest within higher education be heard. (Author/JM) |
