AbstractThe intent of this paper is to touch on current trends that contribute to adversarial relationships in education and to pose policy-related questions that derive from these trends. At the federal level, adversarial relationships spring from demands from legislation, the courts, and federal officials. At the state level, confrontation arises from the demands of legislation, state officials, interest groups, and the state courts. At the local level, adversaries include students, parents, and community interest groups. Several analytical questions should guide policy research about adversarial relationships in education. Some of these questions are societal-based and revolve around issues such as whether adversarial relations are part of a societal trend, whether they signal a recognition of cultural pluralism, or whether some people are becoming enamored of confrontation for its own sake. Other questions are school-based and focus on such issues as the ability or willingness of educators to respond to social conditions, the defensiveness of educators, and the effects of collective negotiations on teachers and administrators. Research can also contribute to the resolution of the argument concerning whether confrontation and conflict are beneficial or harmful for education. (Author/JM)
