| Abstract | Life-table procedures and data from the 1973 Family Growth Survey are used in this paper to determine: (1) the cumulative probability that by a given age a child will have experiences a single-parent family as a consequence of marital disruption; (2) the cumulative proportion of these children experiencing either remarriage or age 18 by given durations after marital disruption; and (3) the average duration of experience in a single-parent family. Findings presented suggest that about a third of all children will spend some time in a single-parent family before age 16 as a consequence of marital disruption. Large differences are shown to exist in relation to race, education, and the age of the mother at the child's birth. Of those affected by disruption, a quarter reach age 18 or have their mother remarry within two years of disruption and about half are still in a one-parent family within five years. Subgroup differences in remarriage rates moderate differences in the experience of this status by education and age of mother but increase the differences by race. (Author/EB) |
