Abstract	The document presents teacher-developed techniques, methods, and activities for social studies instruction. The handbook is designed to aid junior high and high school classroom teachers as they develop, implement, and evaluate social studies programs. The document is presented in 12 chapters. Chapter I identifies objectives of social studies education, including good citizenship, development of critical thought, and knowledge of significant developments in human history. Chapter II presents ideas for lesson planning. Chapter III explains the art of questioning for inquiry and discovery learning. Chapter IV suggests independent study projects. Chapter V provides information on dealing with values in the classroom. Chapter VI discusses the relationship of student literacy to social studies. Chapters VII and VIII discuss types of media and simulation activities. Chapter IX explains testing and evaluation. Chapter X discusses electives and curriculum considerations. Chapters XI and XII examine professional growth and evaluation of social studies instruction. Each chapter includes a bibliography, tests, notes to the teacher, identification of skills to be developed by specific activities, reading selections, objectives, and discussion questions. (DB)
