Abstract | This study undertook the following tasks: (1) to review the social science literature on sex roles, sex role socialization and sex discrimination in education; (2) to develop a model that accounts for sex discrimination and indicates how to eliminate it; and (3) to design a program to test the model developed. The study made several assumptions. First, it took the point of view that most scientific work on these problems is fundamentally flawed because it is based on an empiricist and positivist conception of science, instead of a dialectical conception. Second, the model of sex-role transcendence which was employed implies that sex discrimination occurs because individuals and institutions are stuck at an intermediate and incomplete stage of sex-role development.
