Abstract | Part of a series of curriculum guides dealing with industrial education in junior high schools, this guide provides three units to be used in a one semester course in grade 9 on the subjects of bikes, electricity, and small engines. The section on bicycles is divided into two parts, mechanical and power (i.e. motorcycles) and covers the topics of bike tools and their uses, types of bikes, bike maintenance, safety and laws of cycling, engine repair and maintenance, and consumer knowledge. In the electricity unit the student becomes acquainted with the various tools, materials, and skills involved in electricity by engaging in activities exploring magnetism, basic sources of electricity, electric circuitry, home wiring, and career opportunities in the field. For the mini-course on small gasoline engines, the topics covered are as follow: basic engine construction, fuel systems, ignition systems, cooling systems, lubrication systems, trouble shooting and maintenance, career opportunities, and safety. Each unit contains a list of its goals, suggested demonstrations and learning activities, equipment needed, test questions, and bibliographies of printed and audiovisual materials. (ELG) |
