Abstract | This sourcebook is one of two supplementary materials for a newspaper course about taxes and tax reform. Program ideas and sources of related resources compiled in the sourcebook are designed to help civic and group leaders and educators plan educational community programs based on the course topics. Section one describes ways in which the program is useful in community and academic programs. It also identifies 15 topics around which weekly or monthly meetings can be planned. Section two suggests program ideas, background readings, and discussion questions for each of the 15 topics. Topics include the politics of taxation, tests of a good tax system, impact of taxation on the economy, social security, comprehensive income tax reform, local government tax and revenue reform, financial problems of big cities, and prospects for tax reform. Section three provides a guide to 36 public and private organizations that can provide resources. Also listed are all the state humanities committees. Section four contains an annotated bibliography of 21 films on tax-related topics such as welfare, bureaucracy, social security, urban problems, and history of taxation. (AV) |
