| Abstract | Universities can play an important role in advancing equality of education since they wield influence over the process of learning itself, over institutions and attitudes, and they play an important role in determining the status and life chances of individuals. In view of the fact that there is a definite and positive relation between education and access to the material benefits of life, it is especially important to educate more blacks. Although many positive changes have occurred over the course of history to improve the status of blacks, statistical data indicate that the far-reaching and cumulative effects of the denial of access to equal educational opportunity for blacks are still with us. If the improvements that have been made are to be maintained and the principles of freedom and equal opportunity are to be affirmed, the tools which make the attainment of these goals possible, the universities, must be made more accountable and accessible for the education of blacks.
