Abstract | One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide contains nine lessons for use in kindergarten and grade 1. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes basic highway safety concepts, stressing communication methods for highway users, visibility and judgmental problems, predictability of behavior, and passenger safety; instructions for using this program, explaining evaluation methods; Arizona law and regulations governing pupil transportation; a form to report misconduct on the school bus; and rules for school bus safety. The lessons cover the following subjects: passengers; waiting for, boarding, riding, and leaving the school bus; emergency procedures on the bus; a classroom visit by the bus driver; automobile passengers; and seat belt use. For each lesson a complete plan is provided, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested basic and enrichment activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. The types of activities include learning songs, games, role playing, building a model bus, coloring and drawing, picture identification, class discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. (ELG) |
