Abstract | Recommendations which emerged from the Second and Third National Conferences on Rural America are presented in this revised platform of principles and policy recommendations for rural America. Major goal of the document is to find practical solutions to problems facing rural people so that strategies of rural revitalization and action can be pursued, while at the same time maintaining a strong system of family owned and operated farms (enabling young farmers to obtain land and equipment, develop alternative farming and marketing systems to reduce dependence on petrochemicals, improve farm income, and benefit consumers). Revisions of these major areas covered in the original 1975 platform are presented with a brief statement of the problem and recommendations for solutions: Self-Government in Rural America; Rural Poverty, Welfare, and Income Maintenance; Land, Resources, and People; Agricultural Production; Employment, Jobs, and Training; Rural Housing and Community Development; Rural Health and Medical Care; Education in Rural America; Energy and Rural People; Rural Economic Development; Rural Public Transportation; and Rural Justice and Legal Assistance. In addition, the document includes new statements and recommendations on Hired Farmworkers, The Rural Aging, and Rural Women. (RS) |
