Abstract | In 1977 the Radio Mathematics Project provided radio lessons in mathematics for 2,800 students enrolled in 105 second-grade and third-grade classes in Nicaraguan public schools. Comparisons between randomly selected experimental and traditionally taught groups show that the achievement at the end of both second and third grade was significantly higher for the experimental (radio) classes than for the traditional classes. The radio programs are being implemented on a wider scale in Nicaragua, and are being accepted well by both teachers and students. The project received international recognition when one of the second-grade programs won the Japan Prize for Radio in 1977. The feedback system of curriculum development was further refined during 1977, and a number of supplementary small research projects were completed. (Author/CMV) |
