| Abstract | The concept of androgyny refers to the psychological wholeness of a person defined as the ability of an individual to identify with both masculine and feminine characteristics, depending on their appropriateness in various situations. This paper presents an overview of the construct of androgyny, describes the Bem Sex Role Inventory as a measure of psychological sex and suggests areas in communication research that would benefit from application of the androgyny perspective. Based on the conceptualization of masculinity and femininity as independent constructs, the Bem Sex Role Inventory is a 60 item self report test that rates personality characteristics on a seven point scale. Median split scoring is used to place individuals in eight categories of psychological sexuality. The paper advocates introducing the variable of personal psychological sex orientation identified through this inventory in the research areas of interpersonal relationships, interpersonal attraction, relational control patterns, self disclosure, interpersonal competency, and language study.
