AbstractTo aid elementary school classroom teachers and others interested in developing humanistic education programs, the book suggests materials, resources, and activities which work toward humanistic goals. Humanistic education is interpreted as a process of helping people develop human potential. The book is presented in 13 chapters. Chapter I defines humanistic education and offers hypothetical case studies. Chapter II examines the relationship between human needs and educational goals and concludes that affective and emotional objectives should be given more prominence within the curriculum. Chapter III suggests premises for constructing a human development program. Chapters IV and V discuss objectives and rationale. Chapter VI discusses five life stages and presents a curriculum guide for affective education. The stages begin with understanding basic human needs and move toward development of social and personal maturity. The guide (the major part of the chapter) consists of goals, objectives, and learning activities presented by developmental stages. Each stage is introduced by title, goal, rationale; followed by six to ten lesson topics which emphasize learning activities and exercises. Chapters VII and VIII review pilot studies and commercial models of humanistic education. Chapter IX suggests resource materials, followed by learning activities (simulation, educational games, group discussion) in chapter X. Chapter XI explains how behavior can be developed in humanistic directions through social participation and role playing. The final chapters explain the role of educators in implementing humanistic education and identify humanistic skills and competencies which teachers should acquire through professional education.
