AbstractIncreasing interdisciplinary learning in high school by basing curriculum on problem solving is the topic of this book. It is based on the proceedings of a conference held in Estes Park, Colorado, January 2-14, 1973. The major objective of the problem-solving approach is to increase individuals' skills in making decisions that will affect their daily lives. Problem-solving skills include conceptualizing a problem, seeking facts that can be adapted to a given situation, and developing confidence in the method employed. The report is presented in seven chapters. Chapter I stresses the urgency of making problem-solving an integral part of an adolescent's educational experience. Chapter II suggests a comprehensive problem-solving curriculum to stimulate individual development. Chapters III and IV elaborate on recommendations offered to the conference by inner city groups, teacher organizations, minority groups, and state departments of education. Recommendations include involving community members in class problem solving activities, in-service workshops to inform teachers about problem solving, and creating problem-solving scales for standardized achievement tests. Chapter V describes a learning environment which would encourage a problem-solving approach. Chapter VI examines ways of structuring curriculum and teaching techniques to heighten student interest. The final chapter recommends that teacher education programs provide prospective teachers with knowledge and experience to help students solve social problems through technology. A directory of conference participants is included. (Author/DB)
