AbstractThe student textbook describes voter registration, nominations, political campaigns, and elections in Georgia. It also shows how young citizens can participate in politics to solve problems which affect them directly. Although the textbook tells a fictional story about students within a city, the issues and information presented are truthful accounts of the way the election process works in Georgia. The textbook is arranged into five sections. In the first section, the students are involved in a political problem called "Save the Trimble River" which is being polluted by a chemical plant. This provides the impetus to get involved in the political process and support the nomination and election of a candidate who will fight the pollution problem. The process of registration is investigated in section two and reinforced with a game in which the players try to meet the requirements of voter registration. Section three deals with qualifications and the process of nomination while chapter four focuses on campaigns and primaries. The last section uses a political election game to engage teams in a fight to gain a majority of votes for their candidates. Each of the five sections includes a bibliography of print and media to add variety to the program. The "Think About This" in each chapter engages the students in thought provoking questions, case studies, and activities in both the classroom and the community. Numerous charts, forms, and cartoons enhance the textbook. The program can serve as a model for other states. (Author/SH)
