Abstract | Presented are three formal papers and 11 workshop summary statements from a 1976 pilot conference on primary prevention of mental illness. Initial chapters describe the design and implementation of the conference and review results of a preconference survey on primary prevention programing. The three formal papers included are "An Overview of Primary Prevention Programing" (S. Goldston), "Basic Strategies in Designing Primary Prevention Programs" (W. Hollister), and "Evaluating Achievable Objectives for Primary Prevention" (B. Bloom). Workshop summary statements cover three areas: primary prevention for specific target groups (including newborn infants at high risk for emotional disorder, widowed persons, and preschoolers); agency strategies for primary prevention (including an epidemiological approach); and aspects of prevention (funding, community involvement, and program management). The final section provides information on conference work groups, conference evaluation, and conference recommendations. (CL) |
