Abstract | The guide offers information about the Human Development Program, reviews literature on affective education, and suggests techniques for teachers to use when implementing Human Development Program (HDP) experiences. HDP is an affective educational program which combines theory and practical strategies for helping teachers improve the educational experiences of students. The most popular HDP innovation is the Magic Circle, in which teachers and students sit in a circle to discuss a preselected topic related to feelings. The booklet, which updates previously published information relating to HDP, is presented in eight sections. Section I reviews HDP theory, which is based upon awareness and mastery of one's own emotions and social interaction with others. Section II identifies 11 Magic Circle skills, including involving all students and encouraging active listening. Section III suggests how teachers can choose topics and lists some topics that relate to the growth areas of the program: awareness, mastery, and interaction. Section IV suggests HDP exercises in creative dramatics, social studies, and English. Sections V and VI stress the importance of community involvement and explain how a teacher can evaluate HDP activities. Section VII presents and explains HDP scales for rating students' emotional and social development. The final section reviews literature germane to the HDP. The appendix presents Magic Circle topics and lists page numbers where answers to frequently asked questions about HDP can be found. A bibliography and an annotated reading list are included.
