Abstract | In the face of the communications revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, curriculum planners and English instructors have recognized the need for the study of the mass media within the discipline of English or communicative arts. This publication was designed as an aid for educators who want to include this area in the curriculum. It discusses ways of determining instructional program objectives, and it lists goals, suggested content, instructional objectives, sample instructional activities (in media awareness, consumer awareness, critical consumer skills, and communication careers), and resource materials for a program in mass communications studies. Classroom activities, evaluation methods, and materials for two sample learning activity units are also suggested. Three appendixes present codes of ethics for journalists and for radio and television broadcasters. (GW) |
