AbstractTo determine if participation in vocational student organizations actually results in an acquisition of leadership characteristics, career growth, community involvement, and social development on the part of its members, descriptive and opinion questionnaires were given to four populations: all State directors of vocational education in the United States and the Virgin Islands; a random sampling of Wisconsin vocational education student organization advisors; a random sampling of Wisconsin student members; and a group of student members considered as "highly participating." Data collected from the State directors indicated strong similarities in the administration of vocational student organizations nationwide. Student advisors indicated a wide spread of percentages in club attendance, and a wide range of activities were suggested that may be helpful in encouraging student involvement. A substantial majority of all students surveyed considered vocational student organizations as providing them with beneficial opportunities. Some of the most frequently cited items selected as being most significant were these: teamwork, decision making, competition; community awareness; career awareness; and social development. To aid in the encouragement of membership, the study recommended offering vocational student organizations as a credit course. (BM)
