AbstractA study was done assessing the responses of 2,000 Hamden High School (Connecticut) graduates at three-, six-, and nine-year intervals after graduation to determine the extent to which the quality and availability of the high school instructional offerings affected their academic and occupational proficiency. Data collection involved (1) the gathering of transcript information, including academic and occupational course credit, and quality point ratios, and (2) surveying the graduates to obtain information about occupational mobility, occupational experience, monthly salary, post-high school education/training, institutions attended and the years attended, and attitudes toward the need for career and vocational education. Based on 419 responses, five conclusions were derived: (1) The graduates are college-oriented individuals, (2) participation in occupational courses did not change over a nine-year period, (3) the graduates were not achieving their post-high school occupational endeavors, (4) the graduates were achieving their post-high school education/training endeavors, and (5) positive attitudes toward occupational courses could be stimualted by programs demonstrating a relevance between the application of educational skills and occupational or career opportunities. It is recommended that the results be used for curriculum modification, program evaluation research, and inservice education strategy development. (The survey questionnaire is appended.) (EM)
