Abstract	The report describes educational policies of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member countries in light of socioeconomic trends. It is intended as a guide to educational and economic development for use by educational policy makers. The report is presented in three sections. Section I discusses the present and long-term role of education in the community and in society. Topics discussed include demographic trends such as drop in fertility, regional migration, and foreign workers; changes in educational demand brought about by democratization; and financial, human, and physical resources. Section II predicts the future of education, examines educational policy trends in Europe since World War II, and suggests general policy outlines in response to these trends. Redefinition of the function of education to include more stress on individual development is suggested as one solution to problems of declining enrollment and increased educational costs. Relations between education and working life are also described. Section III summarizes changing patterns in educational growth and demand, relations between education and employment, financial and manpower resources, educational needs, responses of the education systeM to basic skill development, employment preparation, and recurrent education.
