| Abstract | This report describes four experiments on various aspects of memory for connected discourse. The first experiment dealt with preexperimental dispositions to respond to sentences and showed that people do come to experiments with biases; therefore, control of materials is necessary in this research area. The second experiment studied the acquisition process, by inserting recognition probes during acquisition, and showed that specific memory and inferential memory develop at different rates, suggesting that different processes are involved. The third experiment varied the information overlap within acquisition lists; the manipulation had minimal effects upon the acquisition of inferential memory. The final experiment studied retention and showed that the ability to discriminate specific acquisition sentences from inferences is stable over a one-week interval, indicating again the distinction between specific memory and inferential memory. A tentative theoretical scheme that suggests ways of accounting for both specific memory and inferential memory is outlined. (Author/AA) |
