AbstractThe study determined the causes for the high dropout rate of Chicano students in Nampa School District 131. In the spring of 1976, a questionnaire was designed and administered to 17 male and 23 female Mexican Americans who had dropped out within the last 5 years (1971-76) and who resided within the school district's boundaries. The questionnaire included questions regarding the respondent's personal history and attitudes toward school. Respondents' names were obtained from school personnel, the Nampa Bilingual Program Home Coordinator, the director of the GED (General Education Development) program, and personnel from the Migrant Education Resource Center and the Boise State Talent Search. Results were tabulated according to mean, range, and frequency. Findings included: educational level of the respondents' parents appeared to be low; 14 felt the teacher/counselor was not interested in them; 19 felt they were not free to talk over problems with a teacher/counselor; loss of interest ranked high as a reason for dropping out; more prejudice was felt from teachers than from students; the majority had average grades at the time of dropping out; and frequently cited was the need to work since the family income was extremely low at the time of their dropping out.
