AbstractHypothesizing that students who were given the opportunity to choose their learning activities in a residential outdoor education school (Stone Valley, Pennsylvania) would more readily attain the behavioral objectives of those activities, 68 fifth grade students participating in a four-day residential outdoor education program were divided into a control (N=32) and an experimental (N=36) group. Planned by classroom teachers, the Outdoor School Director, and the investigator, the same objectives and learning activities (water ecology, forest plants, a graveyard trip, and survival simulation) were scheduled in such a way that the control group had only one choice of activity, while the experimental group was offered four different activity choices during each of the two, two-hour daily activity periods. A written, objective test consisting of 10 questions based upon the activity objectives was administered to the subjects in their classrooms during the week before and after the outdoor school experience. Comparisons were made between: the entire control group and the entire experimental group; the entire control group and members of the experimental group participating in the activity for which objectives were tested; and pre- and post test scores within each group. Results indicated no significant differences between the control and experimental groups, although both groups demonstrated significant learning. (JC)
