Abstract | The contributions of private donors are essential to the financial health of all public and private colleges and universities in this country. This study shows the pattern of giving in 1973-74, focusing on contributions of individual donors, alumni, and nonalumni. Sample institutions were surveyed and the results indicate that voluntary individual gifts were made to the 988 reporting institutions in the aggregate amount of more than $830 million. The report demonstrates the importance of voluntary support, the dependence of higher education on the large gift, the importance of gifts of property, as well as other types of gifts, such as bequests, deferred contributions, and life-time gifts. The survey indicates that although total giving in 1973-74 is estimated to be the same as in 1972-73, contributions from business, religious denominations, foundations, and other sources increased, while voluntary support from individual donors declined by six percent.
