Abstract	Development of alternative doctoral programs to meet a broadened range of social and educational needs is discussed. The Doctor of Arts degree is seen as only one alternative to the status quo. Regardless of the decision on that degree at a university, the basic issues remain, as do other alternative solutions, including reform of the Ph.D. It remains the responsibility of the various academic units to answer questions of need, appropriateness, and quality of any degree program, questions which cannot be resolved without considerable investigations and discussion within the context of that unit's offerings.
