Abstract | Approximately one out of every four California adults age 18 or older participated in the fall of 1974 in some form of postsecondary education. Over two-thirds of them were enrolled part-time. Half were older than 25 years of age. A large number were enrolled for reasons other than occupational advancement. Data indicates interest in continuing education by over twice as many adults as are currently enrolled. Will this current level of interest equal California's need for postsecondary opportunities in the future? And will California meet its needs for postsecondary alternatives if it responds only to this current level of interest in education? Data indicates that the answer to both questions is no.
