AbstractThe report presents an analysis of changes in childbearing plans of young women and the implications of these plans for understanding labor force behavior as well as predicting fertility levels of the population. Data used were derived from the National Longitudinal Study, a nationally representative survey of 5,000 young women born between 1944-54. The first chapter contains introductory information and summaries of the other three chapters. Chapter Two presents a description of and statistics on the amount of change in level of birth expectations between 1971-73 for 17 to 27 year old women, which amounted to a decrease of about 300 children per 1,000 women. Analysis of behavior and attitudinal changes is presented with an attempt to relate the decline to both stable and changing characteristics of women. Chapter Three develops nonrecursive statistical models to investigate the effects of women's labor force participation plans and fertility expectations on each other. Chapter Four shows that there is a large, statistically significant, inverse relationship between women's age and the effect of their labor force participation plans on their fertility expectations. Appended material includes equations used in the statistical model, references, and 15 tables of statistical data. (Author/MS)
