| Abstract | This paper describes the "euphemistic lexicographical technique," which is recommended for use by lexicographers for the frank recording of vulgar speech. This is a monodirectional technique to be used in bilingual dictionaries prepared for speakers of only one of the two languages. The vulgar words will not appear in the source language which is native to the user of the dictionary. On the side of the dictionary in which the source language is not the native language of the user, the vulgar words and expressions will appear as entry words and run-on expressions in alphabetical order. The target language, which on this side of the dictionary is the native language of the user, will be provided with the proper usage labels. The meaning of the source word or expression will be indicated by refined or neutral equivalents in the target language. The student of a foreign language often has little chance to learn the vulgar words by contact with native speakers and must be informed of them by means of a dictionary. Knowledge of these words is essential because the student needs to know what to avoid and how to interpret the level of speech of speakers and writers in the foreign language. (Author/CLK) |
