Abstract | The issue addressed is that of developing effective relationships between the schools and the community. The need for community involvement is explicated and the goals of community involvement are outlined. A theoretical basis for community involvement is presented, followed by the presentation of a model of home-school-community relationships. The components of the model are examined in detail and suggestions made for improving these relationships through the use of the model. The relationship between the learning process and the environment is examined, and methods for investigating the environment are presented. Relevant research is quoted to support the ideas presented. A section specifically related to research follows the discussion of involvement and participation, including a study of community involvement in Wisconsin schools. A model of the processes included in community involvement is presented. The chapter concludes with some recommendations for improving the nature and extent of community involvement in education.
