AbstractThe conference papers focus on an effort to identify strategies for improving the professional delivery of guidance and counseling services to students. The first paper, Career Education: A Broadening Educational Perspective, presents a definition of career as a purposeful life pattern of work-related activities and assorted life styles. Career education should therefore be involved with a broadened educational perspective which includes student development and the community. The second paper, Career Development as Self-Development: Beyond Career Education, discusses the guidance approach to career education which would unify academic, vocational, and guidance efforts around individuals and their needs. Several characteristics of the self-development approach to career education and a conceptual career development curriculum model are presented and related to a discussion on how they relate to the self-development needs of women. The third paper, The Role of Assessment in Career Guidance: A Reappraisal, discusses common misconceptions about the use of tests in counseling and the importance of test information in career guidance and career exploration. The vital need for counselors to acquire skills for a comprehensive career guidance program for all educational levels is emphasized in the fourth paper, A Summary--Future Directions. (Author/EC)
