AbstractBesides their primary mission of providing education to the students of North Dakota, the 11 colleges and universities in the state represent an important "industry" which generates substantial income to the businesses and people of the state. Total college-related spending in North Dakota was $76 million during the 1973-1974 school year. This included purchasing supplies, materials, equipment, buildings and services, spending by faculty, staff, students, and visitors. The state appropriated about $36 million in support of higher education during the same period. Thus, for each $1 the state contributed to higher education, the colleges and universities returned $2.10 to the economy of North Dakota. Although limited, the Financial analysis data indicates that college related sources are an important source of credit in the state. Time and demand deposits have expanded the credit base in commercial banks as well as savings and loan associations and credit unions. (JMF)
