AbstractIn order to measure the importance of financial assistance to part-time students and develop a profile of part-time students at Worthington Community College (WCC), a questionnaire was designed and mailed to each of the 255 persons who had enrolled at WCC as part-time students during the 1974-75 college year. Although the response rate was low (29.4 percent), certain persistent indications were noted: financial assistance is desired and needed by many part-time students; in many cases, finances are a key factor in a decision to terminate or delay the realization of educational goals. Most part-time students are married, and bear considerable familial responsibilities, adding to the financial burden of attending college. The greatest financial difficulty is realized by women students, particularly married women students. When financial assistance is available, progress toward the realization of educational goals is enhanced--as evidenced by the average credit load carried. Since part-time students offer short-term, rather pragmatic reasons for attending college, the most effective dispersal of financial assistance may be in the form of many small grants, which should be sufficient to encourage students to meet short-term goals. Data are organized into charts and tables, and the survey instrument is appended. (Author/NHM)
