AbstractThe handbook for special education personnel was written by 18 graduate students culminating a period of intensive work with physically and mentally handicapped adults at workshops operated by the Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Citizens and the Easter Seal Society. The first chapter details the steps from contract procurement to work completion for a sheltered workshop, providing information on workshop organization, time studies, bids, foreman or work supervisor's duties, training procedures, safety, and productivity and reevaluation. Chapter 2 outlines problems in occupational placement and suggests some ways to overcome them. Criteria and methods for evaluating occupational and community living skills are presented in Chapter 3, which also contains vocabulary lists of functional words related to work and to the use of tools. Task analyses, educational and skill prerequisites, and descriptions of 10 job experiences by workshop participants are provided in the fourth chapter. The final chapter describes four additional jobs and the tasks they require. A brief list of information sources concludes the handbook. (MS)
