AbstractThe study analyzes the attitudes and perceptions of vocational educators with respect to education for the elderly. An open-ended, closed form survey questionnaire mailed to a stratified random sample of vocational educators in Virginia was analyzed. An 80.23 percent return was obtained. Few significant differences were found in comparing the stratification variables of sex, age, vocational service area, vocational education status, geographical location, and vocational education level with attitudes toward the elderly. Vocational educators were found to be somewhat homogeneous in attitudes and perceptions. Vocational educators perceived that the elderly were a proper concern of the profession, and that, for the most part, personnel and material resources were inadequate for the task of working with the elderly. It was found that few programs were being offered for the aged by vocational education as a profession, and that where such programs were in effect they were likely to be adult education offerings in skill development areas with the aged eligible to attend, but such activities were not specifically planned for them. Basically, it was found that vocational educators are sensitive to the needs of the aged, but largely unaware of how those needs can be met within the existing structure of vocational education.
