Abstract | In this document, differences in what students expect to earn and what the census data indicates is eventually being earned at each age is considered. The difference between private returns and social rates of return is defined and reported by occupational field. Finally, the primary emphasis on why students and their families invest in graduate education is further developed and tested. The microeconomic data is from a nationwide sample of 5,346 current students, about 50 percent of whom are currently juniors and seniors who plan to attend graduate school. The rates of return take both the costs and returns of graduate education into account and permit comparisons by sex, race, educational level, and occupational objective. (Author/KE) |
