Abstract | Investigated were master's degree programs for the preparation of secondary school earth science teachers. Programs studied were classified as: (1) noninstitute college programs, and (2) National Science Foundation (NSF) institute programs. A total of 289 students enrolled in noninstitute programs contributed data by personal visits and questionnaires. Information received from institute directors also provided data. Courses most frequently offered in the institutes studied were meteorology, mineralogy, oceanography, and astronomy. Recommendations cited for noninstitute programs were: (1) develop programs in specific states, and (2) design programs primarily for inservice teachers with minimal earth science preparation. Recommendations for NSF institutes were: (1) include more cooperative college-school programs, (2) brief instructors on institute objectives, (3) minimize significant differences in science and mathematics background of participants, and (4) encourage membership in professional earth science societies.
